Barbie (2023) Review

Barbie is not a complex character nor is Ken. They have fairly pre-ordained roles and fit to any adventure their owner wants to set them on. Based on this fact does the film fit every viewer’s adventure it would like Barbie and Ken to go on? No it doesn’t, not even close.

John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) Review

Not all heroes wear capes or are from the start the good guy. However, these are often the heroes we gravitate to and that are willing to make the necessary sacrifice to dismantle the existing power structures at work. We used to also have these sorts of cinematic narratives as star vehicles for big-time actors to jump onto and for us to enjoy in the process, however that is also vanishing with each coming year. Nowadays with fewer major stars to go around. The question is are these films worth their salt without them and would a film such as ‘John Wick’ work without Keanu Reeves? I personally think not and thank the heavens we can still get our kicks from time to time with the few stars we have left. As ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ not only raises the stakes but is also most likely the best film in the series after the first.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018) Review

Image
This film was the talk of the town more than a few years ago and was portrayed as if it was the triumphant return of the romantic comedy when it was anything, but that. Its plot is nothing new once you strip it away of its clichés and horrendous notions on romance and lacks many situations of genuine comedy. It is unfortunately the opposite of what has been sold by both the media and critics as it’s a bland production of a romantic adventure no one should partake in or hope for.

I Am Legend (2007) Review

Was requested to review this film and thought it would be interesting to see if much of my opinion would have changed after so many years and in fact it didn’t. I still appreciate it for the entertainment value it provides and Will Smith’s pure star power of holding the film together. However, it’s monsters/zombies and effects connected to them are the film’s real letdown and missed opportunity on a technical, but also narrative level.

Charlie's Angels (2019) Trailer - Remake

Image
As much as anyone is aware that reboots, remakes and sequels are part and parcel of the Hollywood studio system, they still aren’t getting any better at it and maybe are losing their touch with grasping at what audiences want or what star power can do to a film. As this film has more star power in its soundtrack rather than its cast list and it’s never a great sign when a movie trailer is more concerned at selling you a hit single rather than promoting you an entertaining flick. director: Elizabeth Banks starring: Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska IMDb page release dates: 15 November 2019 (USA), 28 November 2019 (Germany)

Thor Ragnarok (2017) Review

Image
Light-hearted action films are Marvel Studios bread and butter and they shouldn't stray far away from that already successful formula. Although, that still doesn't mean that they shouldn't make the effort and build upon their grandiose catalogue of material to spice things up even further or to make their characters even more unique from one another. Otherwise, we would be seeing the same film over and over again and we are slowly, but surely coming possibly to that point.

Thor (2011) Review

Of all the Marvel properties that could have gone horribly wrong, "Thor" maybe was top of the list. Trying to get the right mix of mythological, superhero, fantasy/sci-fi elements of the comics and on top of that make the casual film goer does not get too confused or consider the film cheesy, was going to be a tough job. However, instead of us speaking of another adaptation gone wrong. We have one of the best comic book films of the year and surely Marvel Studios best film yet. With director Kenneth Branagh at the helm, he has managed to bring the God of Thunder to his true glory on the big screen. director:  Kenneth Branagh writers:  Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz & Don Payne starring:  Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddlestone and Anthony Hopkins genre:  Action | Comics | Sci-Fi released:  May 6, 2011 (U.S.), April 28, 2011 (Greece) story: In the Marvel universe there are nine realms (planets), one of which is Earth.
